WordPress critical error after an update

A WordPress critical error often follows a plugin, theme or PHP compatibility change. The last visible action is useful evidence, but it is not automatically the root cause.

1. Preserve the timeline

  • Write down the update, setting or hosting change that happened immediately before the error.
  • Save the exact error and check for an official WordPress recovery-mode email.
  • Confirm whether the public site, administrator area or both are affected.
02

2. Use the safest available recovery path

  • Prefer a host-provided staging copy or recovery mode over changing live files.
  • Verify that a backup contains both files and database data before relying on it.
  • Change one component at a time and reload the same failing route after each controlled action.
03

3. Escalate with useful evidence

  • Provide the WordPress, PHP, theme and suspected plugin versions when known.
  • Include the timestamp and exact failing route, but remove secrets and personal data.
  • Ask for a root-cause explanation and readback test, not only a temporary visual fix.
